Jakarta welcomes travellers in their masses: 02-09-2008

Jakarta is becoming a relative traveller and tourist hot spot, according to figures recently released by the city's statistics agency, reports the Jakarta Post.

Between January and July, 870,011 people visited the city, leaving it on track to reach its yearly target, according to Jakarta Statistics Agency head Djamal.

"Jakarta may be able to meet its target of 1.3 million foreign tourists this year if the figures remain stable for the next four months," he told the Jakarta Post.

"Effective promotion and conducive conditions are the perfect strategies to attract more tourists to the city. We hope the number continues to rise."

The figures represent a 23 per cent rise on travellers visiting the area in the same period last year.

Travellers often visit Jakarta to take a boat to one of the other islands, or while using the Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

With a population of over 8 million, the Indonesian capital - sometimes known as The Big Durian after the tropical fruit - is a hive of activity with something to offer every traveller.
