Environmental flavour to a Malaysian holiday: 28-03-2008

Rescued elephants, Kuala Gandah elephant sanctuaryMalaysia's new tourism minister has unveiled plans to ensure visitors to the country help preserve its flora and fauna.

Azlina Othman wants the country to focus on its "wonderful natural environment", which is great news for travellers as Malaysia possesses some of the most beautiful animals and scenery on the planet.

Tigers, leopards and sea turtles are just a few of the amazing animals to be found in Malaysia and it looks as though the new attitude to the country's environment is already having a positive effect after a new conservation area was announced.

Land near to the Segama river will be rehabilitated so wildlife such as the endangered pygmy Borneo elephant can enjoy free space to roam.

Dr Marc Ancrenaz of the Borneo Wildlife Centre is setting up the sanctuary and told eTN that he wanted to promote a wider understanding of the nation's wildlife.
