Places to See and Stay: Mount Hagen - Papua New Guinea

Visit The Highlands

Views over Mount Hagen from Rondon Ridge, Papua New Guinea

Capital of the Western Highlands province, Mount Hagen is the gateway to the smaller Highland towns, the Sepik River and the north coast.

The town comes to life in its annual festival in August, when all the tribes and clans of the Highlands collect in a competitive display of dress, dance and song, but at other times of year tours can be taken into the surrounding countryside.

In this rural region the Wahgi culture is still thriving, with the ceremonial “mud-men” dance just one of a diverse range of traditional displays.
