Thailand is hoping for more WHS locations: 17-06-2008

Thailand is hoping for more WHS locations18643021 Bangkok, ThailandThailand is urging Unesco to consider sites in three different areas for inclusion in the list of World Heritage sites.

The fine arts department (FAD) is requesting that the organisation examine the 800 year old towns of Nan, Lamphun and Chiang Sean, the Chao Phraya landscape, and the former home of the Sri Vijava population.

The three old towns were sites of the Lanna civilisation and feature pogodas and temples, and the Chao Phraya landscape, which runs from the King Rama VIII bridge in Bangkok to the King Rama I memorial bridge, near Pak Klong Talat.

The Sri Vijava area, which covers what is now Surat, Thani, Kakhon, Si Thammara and Pattani, would require the support of Malaysia due to the sprawl crossing the border into the Kedah State.

Thailand is already home to three World Heritage sites and hopes to be awarded the title again.

Ayutthaya Historical Park, Sukhothai Historical Park and Ban Chiang archaeological site are the current holders of the honours.
