Traditional Vietnam festival gets underway: 17-08-2007

The Ninh Thuan Festival opened on Wednesday as a celebration of Vietnam's culture, history, and traditions.
Running until August 20th, the festival hopes to showcase many of the activities available in the area, from sports contests to musical programmes. The theme for this festival is "Ninh Thuan's hidden colours".
Ninh Thuan, a province in the south-east of Vietnam, is an area populated by many different ethnic groups. The festival hopes to encompass the customs of the Kinh, Cham and Rac Lay groups.
Activities running during the festival include a display of the region's varied foods, traditional dragon boat racing, and a sheep beauty contest.
Additionally, the Cau Ngu, a traditional fishermen's festival held to pray for a good fishing year, will also be featured. There will also be a competition for the best cook of the region.
The Ninh Thuan region includes numerous white sand beaches as well as ancient and mysterious temples. Popular activities there include visiting the coral islands in a glass-bottomed boat.
