Vietnamese imperial city to be improved for cultural festival18267367The city of Hue in central Vietnam is to undergo a number of renovations to prepare it for what authorities hope will be the biggest international Hue festival yet.

The biannual Hue Festival, which began in 2000, celebrates the history and culture of the city, which is one of the most popular destinations in Vietnam.

Hue is made up of a complex of monuments built during the Nguyen Lords dynasty in the 17th century.

Once the capital of Vietnam and the home of Vietnamese royalty, it is now seen as a spectacular and beautiful city. Its monuments, temples, pagodas and citadel are recognised as a Unesco world heritage site.

For those hoping to travel to Vietnam, the next Hue festival is to be in June 2008, with local food, art, literature and music on display.

Key events include the impressive opening and closing ceremonies, a tour of the royal palace by night, and various performances of plays, rituals and fashion shows over the ten days of celebration.
