Reasons To
Visit Indonesia

  • Volcanos

Heading up Krakatau is like trekking over Mars and as the guides tell you once you get half way: "No further or our boots melt". The basic nature of camping out on the island is outshone by the fact you will probably be the only people staying overnight and will be sleeping just metres from the ocean in the shadow of a volcano. A beautiful coral reef around one side of the island offers excellent snorkelling and the views over to the peak of the smoking Anak Krakatau are superb.

  • Beaches

The most obvious choice for a beach destination in Indonesia would be the island of Bali. Places like Seminyak, Sanur and Jimbiran are idyllic retreats.

  • History & culture

Indonesia is scattered with many temples and ancient monuments. Perhaps the most famous is the vast pyramidal structure of Borobudur, considered to be one of Southeast Asia’s greatest religious relics. Hundreds of Buddha images stare impassively out over the plains and the detailed galleries and terraces that lead up to its central stupa tell tales of ancient gods and battles.

  • Weather

There is never really a 'bad' time to go to Indonesia and the weather is good during the British summer months unlike many other Southeast Asian destinations. Even during the wet season, the rain won't dampen the enjoyment of your holiday as it falls in short downpours and it means that the scenery around you will be lush and colourful.

  • Wildlife

Indonesia is home to some incredible wildlife and the national parks in Kalimantan and Sumatra are some of the best places to see it. Trek through jungles, rivers and waterfalls on foot or by elephant to discover the wonders of nature from the orang-utan to the world's largest flower.

As one of the best hotels on the island, the Oberoi Lombok exudes class from the moment you arrive.

The white sand beach of Medana Bay is a beautiful setting and a good half hour away from the crowds of Senggigi. It is a scenic 45 minute drive from the airport; has spacious manicured lawns, a relaxing spa and sports facilities including tennis court and croquet lawn.

The pavilion rooms are big, with the marble bathroom as a major feature and large outdoor balconies to watch the sunset over the water if you are in an ocean view pavilion (which are also 40 square metres larger). The villas are really special, particularly the ones with a large private pool and views out to the ocean. Central to the resort are the triple reflection pools, one of which is the 40 metre swimming pool. From the hotel you can look out across the ocean with views of the Gili Islands and the tropical waters while behind you the awe-inspiring peak of Mount Rinjani can be seen amongst the clouds.

The Oberoi's famous poolside Lumbung restaurant is open year round and in the peak months of July and August and other busy times of year this is added to by a restaurant on the beach. If you have a long stay outside of July/August you may want to try the Tugu restaurant nearby as an alternative - details in our restaurant recommendations for the area provided before you leave. Because of the Oberoi's isolation and standing on the island you may find that your day to day costs for meals, drinks and activities are more expensive than other properties in the region.

A drop off at the Gili Islands costs around £30 per person for the return speedboat journey and you can take the Oberoi's snorkelling gear with you. Please speak to your specialist for current guideline food and drink prices to help you budget accordingly.
