Reasons To
Visit Indonesia

  • Volcanos

Heading up Krakatau is like trekking over Mars and as the guides tell you once you get half way: "No further or our boots melt". The basic nature of camping out on the island is outshone by the fact you will probably be the only people staying overnight and will be sleeping just metres from the ocean in the shadow of a volcano. A beautiful coral reef around one side of the island offers excellent snorkelling and the views over to the peak of the smoking Anak Krakatau are superb.

  • Beaches

The most obvious choice for a beach destination in Indonesia would be the island of Bali. Places like Seminyak, Sanur and Jimbiran are idyllic retreats.

  • History & culture

Indonesia is scattered with many temples and ancient monuments. Perhaps the most famous is the vast pyramidal structure of Borobudur, considered to be one of Southeast Asia’s greatest religious relics. Hundreds of Buddha images stare impassively out over the plains and the detailed galleries and terraces that lead up to its central stupa tell tales of ancient gods and battles.

  • Weather

There is never really a 'bad' time to go to Indonesia and the weather is good during the British summer months unlike many other Southeast Asian destinations. Even during the wet season, the rain won't dampen the enjoyment of your holiday as it falls in short downpours and it means that the scenery around you will be lush and colourful.

  • Wildlife

Indonesia is home to some incredible wildlife and the national parks in Kalimantan and Sumatra are some of the best places to see it. Trek through jungles, rivers and waterfalls on foot or by elephant to discover the wonders of nature from the orang-utan to the world's largest flower.

Accommodation in Indonesia: Uma

This small boutique property is great value and a fantastic setting for couples. A hotel in tune with the creative atmosphere of Ubud.

Our Rating: First Class

Uma

Ubud

This small boutique property has been one of our client favourites for years due to it's tranquillity, location and friendly service that instantly puts you in to a relaxed state of mind.

Located on the outskirts of Ubud, it perches on the edge of the Tjampuhan Valley with views over the River Oos but is still only half hour walk (or five minute drive) to the centre of town.

The 14 bright and airy terrace rooms feature a comfortable four-poster bed draped in white voile. Large French doors open onto the private terrace overlooking Uma Ubud’s gardens. The bathroom has a sunken bath, outdoor shower and a beautiful ornate mirror.

The ten garden rooms boast a spacious bedroom and bathroom connected to an open-air courtyard with a comfortable seating area and fish pond. Each features a four-poster bed and contemporary, open-air black and white bathroom with tub and separate shower.

The three pool suites have a large sitting and dining room as well as a comfortable bedroom featuring a four-poster bed. The highlight is the private plunge pool with views of the Balinese jungle and Tjampuhan Valley.

There is just one headline suite, the Shambhala Suite, and this offers a separate bedroom, sitting area and bathroom as well as a private spa treatment area, a spacious sundeck and an infinity pool overlooking the Tjampuhan Valley and snaking River Oos.

Kemiri, meaning candlenut in Bahasa Indonesia, is Uma's open-air restaurant beside a waterfall-fed pond, with alang-alang thatched ceilings. Dishes showcase Bali’s rich gourmet heritage aswell as modern interpretations of Southeast Asian cooking.

The COMO Shambhala Retreat at Uma Ubud offers Asian-inspired spa treatments including massage, facials for restorative skincare and authentic Ayurvedic therapies - we recommend booking in advance during the summer months when it is very popular with guests.

Complimentary activities are laid on daily and include a yoga class, guided morning walk, use of the steam room, sauna and gym, in room internet access and use of the short shuttle run in to and from town.
