Day by Day

Day 1London

Overnight flight from the UK to Sumatra.

Day 2Singapore - Medan

On arrival in Medan you will need to obtain your Indonesia visa (US$25pp for 30 days) before meeting your private guide who will take you to your hotel.

Day 3Medan - Tangkahan

This morning you will escape the city and travel in to the Sumatran rainforest. Once you have arrived at Tangkahan you will head out in to the jungle with your local ranger and guide.

Day 4Tangkahan

This morning you will visit a nearby elephant sanctuary for a very hands-on experience! You can get involved in feeding the elephants and bathing them in the river (prepare to get wet!). You will then ride your elephant through the dense jungle and have the chance to be the mahout (elephant driver). After freshening up back at the lodge you will go tubing for roughly an hour downstream; a great way to take in the flora and fauna. Lunch will be prepared for you as you take a dip beneath a remote waterfall. Another section of gentle tubing allows for a rest as lunch goes down. You then take a walk back to your lodge via local villages.

Day 5Tangkahan - Bukit Lawang

This morning you will head in to the forest on foot with your guide, who can explain the various uses of each plant and tree while you look for signs of the animals in the area. This afternoon you transfer along very rough roads to Bukit Lawang, where the evening is free to relax by the river.

Day 6Bukit Lawang

This morning you will be trekking through the rainforest of Bukit Lawang National Park. Regular sightings here include orang-utan, thomas-leaf monkey (indigenous to Sumatra) and gibbon. Even if you don't meet them out in the jungle then you can see orang-utan at the morning or afternoon feeding session at the rehabilitation centre.

Day 7Bukit Lawang - Medan - Jakarta

Head back to Medan today for your flight down to Java. You will be met at Jakarta airport and taken in to the city where you can check-in to your hotel for the night. After jungle restaurants for the last four nights you may like to stay in a and eat at your hotel or head out to one of the city's well know eateries.

Day 8Jakarta - Mount Krakatau

You have a lengthy drive to Java's western tip where you head out on the open sea to Mount Krakatau. (Before you set off please check your crew are aware of any dietary requirements you have). Enjoy the day snorkelling and exploring as well as climbing the volcano. Your crew will cook this evenings meals over an open fire and you can go to sleep with the sounds of the waves lapping at your feet.

Day 9Mount Krakatau - Jakarta - Yogyakarta

After a morning swim (perhaps at sun rise if you can face the early start) you will retrace your steps back to Jakarta for the short flight to Yogyakarta. You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel.

Day 10Yogyakarta

After a busy few days you have today at leisure just to relax around the hotel. Enjoy the spa, pool and restaurants and if you wish to explore there are some recommendations in your full itinerary.

Day 11Yogyakarta

Rise early for the journey to Borobudur in time for sun rise at the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world. After exploring the site with your guide and learning about the carvings and detail you will visit a smaller nearby temple and then head in to Yogya itself to see the highlights of the city.

Day 12Yogyakarta - Solo - Singapore

Overnight flight home to the UK.

Arrive back in the UK early this morning
