There are few things in Southeast Asia that can beat a beer Lao as the sunsets over the Mekong - from the riverbanks in Luang Prabang to the 4000 islands, watching the world go by at sunset is a must.

  • The North

The northern part of Laos is a remote region that sees few tourists. Heading north from the Thai border towards China, the town of Luang Nam Tha is the gateway to the Nam Ha National Park, with countless opportunities to explore on foot, by kayak and on mountain bikes. A little further south you will stumble upon the picturesque area of Muang La and the dramatic valley of Nong Khiaw before arriving by road or boat at the cultural centre of Luang Prabang.

Accommodation in Laos: Mekong Riverside

The Mekong Riverside is a welcome addition to the small boutique options in Luang Prabang and offers great value for money in a stylish and tranquil environment.

Our Rating: Medium

Mekong Riverside

Luang Prabang

Just steps from the heart of Luang Prabang, the Mekong Riverside is a brand new addition to this UNESCO World Heritage town's list of excellent small boutique hotels. It sits in a quiet part of town and looks over the Mekong River in an old French Colonial era building that has been thoughtfully renovated.

Some of the rooms come with balconies offering Mekong views but all of the rooms are tastefully decorated with dark woods and a yellow wash on the walls reminiscent of the bygone colonial days.

Air conditioning and wi-fi come as standard.
