There are few things in Southeast Asia that can beat a beer Lao as the sunsets over the Mekong - from the riverbanks in Luang Prabang to the 4000 islands, watching the world go by at sunset is a must.

  • The North

The northern part of Laos is a remote region that sees few tourists. Heading north from the Thai border towards China, the town of Luang Nam Tha is the gateway to the Nam Ha National Park, with countless opportunities to explore on foot, by kayak and on mountain bikes. A little further south you will stumble upon the picturesque area of Muang La and the dramatic valley of Nong Khiaw before arriving by road or boat at the cultural centre of Luang Prabang.

Visit 4,000 Islands, Champasak Province

In the dry season there is so little water around the southern part of the Mekong River, it is said that if all the sand banks and islets are counted there would be over 4,000 islands (hence the name).

4,000 Islands

Champasak Province, Laos

Si Phan Don is the Lao way to describe the 4,000 Islands area in Southern Laos.

During the rainy season this is the widest point of the Mekong River, but in the dry season there is so little water around it is said that if all the sand banks and islets are counted there would be over 4,000 Islands (hence the name).

Three main islands

The three main islands that remain all year round are Don Khong, Don Khone and Don Det and on each of these there are a few colonial villas left over by the French.

Freshwater dolphins

In this area you can spot freshwater dolphins, but the main activity is just sitting back, relaxing and getting used to the slow pace of Lao life.
