  • The North

The northern part of Laos is a remote region that sees few tourists. Heading north from the Thai border towards China, the town of Luang Nam Tha is the gateway to the Nam Ha National Park, with countless opportunities to explore on foot, by kayak and on mountain bikes. A little further south you will stumble upon the picturesque area of Muang La and the dramatic valley of Nong Khiaw before arriving by road or boat at the cultural centre of Luang Prabang.

Bolaven Plateau

Champasak Province, Laos

Lush and picturesque, the Bolaven Plateau lies in the northeastern region of the Champasak province, an hour or so from Pakse.

At a height of 600 metres above sea level, the plateau is scattered with coffee and tea plantations, waterfalls, lush jungle and ethnic minority villages. It offers the visitor a great insight into rural life in this remote, unspoilt corner of Asia.

Things to do

Several days can easily be spent exploring animist and shaman ethnic villages, swimming in the rock pools of the Tad Lo waterfall or visiting tea and coffee plantations, with some beautiful jungle treks and elephant rides for the more adventurous.

The accommodation here is very basic so for some it may be more appropriate to simply visit the area as a day trip from Pakse.
