You are here:
Madang Coast, Papua New Guinea
A traditional weekend destination for expats, Madang still retains its relaxed, peaceful atmosphere.
There is an excellent cultural centre, several pleasant parks, a thriving market, and countless flying foxes, which hang like fruit from every tree.
Stretching along the coast to the north are a number of sublime tropical beaches fringed with palm trees, with some of the world’s most diverse and spectacular diving just offshore.
Overland excursions from here pass through scenic cocoa and coconut plantations before arriving at local villages. Bil Bil is one of our favourites, as the traditional costumes reflect its history as a local trading post; even their headdresses are shaped like ships.
Try to coincide your trip with a Sing-Sing cultural festival: Mount Hagen and the Goroka festivals take place in August and September.
