The Highlands
Papua New Guinea
The Highlands are the most densely populated and agriculturally productive region of Papua New Guinea.
They were first explored by missionaries and gold prospectors in the 1930s and are still thought to shelter some undiscovered tribes.
Tribal culture
Many tribes still maintain their cultural traditions and clan loyalties remain strong: any individual will immediately strike a close relationship with a 'wontok', someone who shares their unique tribal language. Most of the settlements are at over 2,000 metres, perched within a serried range of rugged mountains and fertile valleys. The Tari Basin is dominated by the numerous clan groups of the Huli tribe.
Bird watching
There are also several species of bird of paradise found in the Tari Gap area, a frequent filming location for natural history documentaries.
