Sepik Men's Sing-Sing, Karawari, Papua New Guinea
The mighty Sepik flows from the mountains close to the border with Irian Jaya and winds through swamplands and thick jungle, staining the ocean with its silt.
Over the millennia every stone has been washed out to sea, leaving wood as the only building material and shells the hardest substance available. Navigable through much of its 1,126 kilometre length, this river reaches deep into a remote world where dugout canoes are the main form of transport and remote communities survive on a diet of smoked fish and sago.
Traditional Sepik carvings and artwork echo with an ancient culture little changed over the ages, protected by the dense tropical rainforest that shades closely in on every side.

Don't be alarmed by the Papuan's harsh and stern facial expressions, they are actually the most friendly people who are as fascinated by us in the West, as we are by them.
