Southeast Asia
MV Sepik Spirit Karawari, Papua New Guinea.
The mighty Sepik river flows from the mountains close to the border with Irian Jaya and winds through swamplands and thick jungle, before meeting the Bismarck Sea east of Wewak.
Over the millennia it washed every stone out to sea, leaving a remarkable culture to form along its shores with wood as the only building material and shells the hardest substance available for tools and weapons.
Navigable through much of its 1,126 kilometre length, this river reaches deep into a remote world where dugout canoes are the main form of transport and distant communities survive on a diet of smoked fish and sago with little contact with the outside world. Traditional Sepik carvings and artwork echo an ancient culture little changed over the ages, protected by the dense tropical rainforest.
Enjoying a cruise on the Sepik river and shallow inland waterways of Papua New Guinea is a wonderful experience and the M/V Sepik Spirit is a fully air-conditioned 30-metre boat, specifically designed to cruise here. Smaller boats enable you to visit less accessible traditional villages and experience the subtly varied cultures of the region.
