Elephant and mahout, Golden Triangle, Thailand
The Golden Triangle, where the Ruak and Mekong Rivers converge, is serene and picturesque with lush green rice paddies and colourful hill tribes.
Stretching for thousands of square miles, the region extends deep into the distant valleys of northern Thailand, Burma and Laos.
Chiang Rai is the main gateway town; once famous for its opium production, it is surrounded by tiny villages with breathtaking, panoramic views. Being close to the borders with Laos and Burma, you can visit their frontier towns or begin a more in-depth exploration of Indochina by heading down the Mekong River into Laos.
We have discovered accommodation options deep in the countryside so you can really get a feel for this remote area.
