For something more off the beaten track, the tropical paradise of Koh Chang is ideal.

Now accessible by a short flight from Bangkok and a local ferry ride, this green and mountainous island is the largest of 47 islands set in a marine park and remains relatively undeveloped in comparison with others in southern Thailand.

Landscape and scenery

Whilst the beaches are at their best between November and February, the island has a host of other natural attractions such as steep cliffs, virgin rainforest and picturesque waterfalls.

Accommodation

Deciding how to spend your time on the island depends largely on your choice of accommodation. There are now several excellent properties that, although not directly on the beach, offer unrivalled views of the mountains and access to more adventurous exploring.

Standing out amongst the island’s resorts for its fresh and contemporary design, the Aana is set in lush forest with an infinity pool and elevated villas nestled amongst the treetops. From here, you can hire a mountain bike or a kayak and make your own way to the nearest white sand beach.

For those who enjoy a more relaxing break, the Koh Chang Tropicana is tucked away on one of the island’s better beaches with rooms located in peaceful well-tended gardens.
