Explore the Visayas group of islands in the Philippines, spend three nights at the Ati-Atihan festival before travelling through Panay and Negros.
This itinerary takes in the Ati-Atihan festival on the island of Panay in the Visayas. The origins of the festival date back to 1210 when refugees from Borneo smeared their faces with soot in affectionate imitation of the Filipino natives. Known as Atis, the Panay natives were quick to capitalise on the arrival of the refugees, selling them land in exchange for gold. The festival is a two week event, but this itinerary has you in Kalibo for the three day/three night culmination of the event. Once the festivities are over you have time to explore the rest of the Visayas including time for snorkelling and relaxing as well as island visits and some points of historical interest.
