July 2009 - 19 Days   Add to Travel Planner

On This Trip
  • Visit the Gandan Monastery in Ulaan Baatar
  • Meet the Reindeer Herders of Lake Khuvsgul
  • Discover the ancient city of Genghis Khan at Karakorum

This tour offers a comprehensive introduction to this varied, ancient and extraordinarily beautiful country, visiting regions that many other tours do not cover. Landscape and cultural sightseeing blend easily in Mongolia and you will have the chance to visit families of nomads, remote Buddhist monasteries and traditional events as well as to take part in horseriding or guided walking if you wish.

A definite highlight of the journey is a chance to experience the Naadam Festival, the largest event in the Mongolian calendar. A two day extravaganza that consists of the three ‘manly’ sports of horse riding, archery, and wrestling, Naadam draws visitors from far and wide, offering the opportunity for families and friends to catch up and visitors to meet and mingle with local people. You will experience the festival in a smaller, more rural setting which offers an entirely more intimate experience – affording the opportunity to join in with the events (if you really want to)!

Following Nadaam the journey takes you to the vast expanses of the Gobi Desert, where a circuit explores the lofty sand dunes of Khongoryn Els, the glacial canyon of Yolyn Am, and the red cliffs of Byanzag, where the world’s richest deposits of dinosaur fossils are found, as well as the country’s ancient capital at Karakorum and Khustai national park. The tour also takes in the beautiful Lake Khuvsgul in northern Mongolia, home of the shamanic ‘Reindeer people’ as well the capital Ulaan Baatar.
