Part of the Great Migration

On This Trip
  • See the mass migration of wildebeest and zebra in the Serengeti

Every year, two million wildebeest and zebra traverse the Serengeti plains in the Great Migration, in search of water and fresh grazing. Predators including lion, cheetah, leopard and hyena are never far away, making game-viewing all the more exciting.

We have designed an adventurous safari to see not only the migration but some of Northern Tanzania’s most prolific wildlife regions. You will travel in modified Land Rovers and camp in areas where there are no other people at all - a private Audley campsite in the middle of the wilderness. At night dinner will be served under the stars, paraffin lanterns will light your way and the only sounds will be those of the wild animals around you. This ventures far from the beaten track and well away from any lodges. In short, it’s a proper old fashioned safari. Departing in February, your safari begins at the wild and beautiful West Kilimanjaro region. Seldom visited by tourists, this will be a wonderful introduction to Tanzania, with the impressive backdrop of Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. You can enjoy guided walks, visits to Maasai bomas and even horse-riding here. From here you will continue to the Ngorongoro Crater, home to black rhino and a vast quantity of other wildlife including lion, buffalo, spotted hyena and elephant.

Saving the real highlight until the end, you will spend three nights in the heart of the action in the southern Serengeti in the Ndutu region, where the migration herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles congregate to graze on the fresh grass, give birth to their young, and store up some energy for their journey north in a few months’ time. Whilst the herds aren’t on the move at this time of year, the sight of millions of these amazing creatures surrounding you as far as the eye can see is truly impressive! It’s wonderful to see the really young wildebeest calves, zebra foals and baby gazelles as they learn from their parents, and predators are never far away, making this a truly exciting time of year to be on safari in the Serengeti.

The safari ends in the small farming town of Arusha where you can choose to fly home or extend your trip with a relaxing stay on a Zanzibar beach.
