Self-drive tours in Alaska

A self-drive holiday in Alaska (sometimes referred to as a fly-drive) is a pleasure as most of the roads away from the larger towns and cities are largely free from heavy traffic.

The major highways in Alaska are all paved and in good condition despite the very harsh winters. Even the lesser roads are generally kept in good order. However, it is wise to keep to the speed limits (ranging from 55 to 65 mph) as some sections can be bumpy with the occasional large pothole to be avoided.

Self Drive Map of Alaska

Most travellers who undertake a self-drive trip to Alaska pick up their cars at or near Anchorage airport; from here it's easy to reach all the main tourist destinations.

The route for a first-time visitor would normally start in Anchorage and take you in a clockwise direction to Denali National Park, with its abundant wildlife. It's then on to Fairbanks, where you may wish to take a paddle wheeler cruise or even take a trip up to the Arctic Circle. From Fairbanks you can visit the old Kennicott copper mine in McCarthy, which is on the edge of the beautiful Wrangell St Elias National Park.

The trip is concluded with visits to charming small towns such as Seward and Homer. Along this part of the coastline we recommend a number of different activities such as whale watching or glacier cruises. It all adds up to make an Alaska fly-drive trip a great option.

Remember, this is only an example and we can tailor-make an Alaska self-drive trip for you in most parts of the region. Below are examples of itineraries which are good for self-drive.
