Australia Self-Drive Holidays

A self-drive holiday in Australia is a pleasure on its scenic, safe and uncrowded roads. Added to this it combines well with internal flights, meaning you can enjoy a self-drive trip in more than one region.

Self-drive tours in Australia

Like New Zealand, a self-drive holiday in Australia is an excellent idea and while the ubiquitous campervan offers practicality, most Audley clients tend to hire a car (or 4WD vehicle) and stay in accommodation we recommend.

For your Australia self-drive trip you will normally pick up your hire car at the airport. Added to this the country combines well with internal flights, so if you are on a lengthy fly-drive we will ensure a car is waiting so you can be on the road as soon as you land.

We will book all of your accommodation in advance and provide you with clear driving instructions and a good road atlas, leaving you to enjoy the drive. Our specialists will have driven the route and have visited the accommodation so the notes they provide for your self-drive holiday are invaluable.

Some roads may be worse than they look on the map and car insurance is invalid in certain areas so we recommend discussing routes and drive times with our Australia specialists.

Self Drive Map of Australia

Because Australia is so large it's not possible to drive and see all of its highlights in one visit. Therefore, most travellers contemplating a self-drive trip to Australia tend to focus on just one or two regions, which will still be very large of course.

The map shows a typical trip which takes in the cosmopolitan cities of Melbourne and Adelaide, where you can enjoy a great array of shops, cafes, restaurants and associated excursions.

A drive along the world renowned Great Ocean Road, stopping at towns like Port Fairy and Apollo Bay, is a perfect fillip before heading to one of Australia's wonderful national parks such as Flinders Ranges or Grampians.

Remember, this is only an example and we can tailor-make an Australia self-drive trip for you in most parts of the country. Below are examples of itineraries which are good for self-drive.
