Self-drive tours in Namibia

A self-drive holiday to Namibia is a great option (the other two being by light aircraft or being driven by your own guide) as like South Africa, the infrastructure is well developed, the political situation very stable and so it's a very safe country to drive around in.

Our specialists can plan a route and provide you with all the information you will need for a Namibia self-drive trip. However, when you reach your chosen camps, expert guides with specialist local knowledge will take you into remote areas on foot or by 4WD.

Namibia is also only one of two Audley destinations where you can enjoy a self-drive safari as part of your overall trip, the other being South Africa.

A typical self-drive itinerary in Namibia

Self Drive Map of Namibia

Namibia's a large country with few people. Accordingly, it has fewer roads so it's harder to take a wrong turning. Add to this well maintained roads and it makes for one of Africa's most popular self-drive destinations.

A good self-drive itinerary for the first-time visitor could take in the capitol, Windhoek, economic and cultural centre of the country, the mighty sand dunes of Sossusvlei, and seals and flamingos on the coast at Swakopmund.

Other areas easily accessible on a self-drive to Namibia are the wild and rugged landscape of Damaraland, one of the country's least populated areas, and the Central Highlands, which is home to plenty of wildlife.

Another area of outstanding wildlife and one of the most famous game parks in Africa, is Etosha. It has large populations of lion, leopard and cheetah, while elephant occur in hundred-strong herds.

Remember, this is only an example and we can tailor-make a Namibia self-drive trip for you in most parts of the country. Below are examples of itineraries which are good for self-drive.
