Most people have probably never considered a self-drive holiday in Oman but this would be a mistake as it has an excellent road network and driving is on the right-hand side of the road, making it all very accessible.

Self-drive holidays in Oman: road through the Ghurbah Bowl, Oman
A self-drive holiday in Oman is a great choice; the roads are generally well maintained and helpfully, many are sign-posted in English. Petrol is also enviably cheap; the cost of a litre has stayed at around 120 Baiza (approx 20p) for decades.
If you simply want to visit the larger towns around Muscat for your self-drive in Oman, then a saloon car will be sufficient. However, for desert driving, wadi-bashing and some of the mountain passes, only a 4WD will do.
In most cases a hire-car is only really necessary for four or five days spent exploring the mountains and desert outside Muscat, although for those who really like to be independent it is worth considering having a car whilst staying in Muscat too.
A typical Oman self-drive holiday starts with some time in the capital, Muscat, including a guided tour of the sights there, before you pick up the car and head out to the mountains and desert around Nizwa.
If you have a 4WD vehicle you can drive all the way to the Wahiba Sands, where you can experience a night in a desert camp. From here you can take the road to Ras Al Jinz, where you'll find a small sandy bay where greenback turtles come ashore to nest all year round (the principal nesting season is July to September).
Remember, this is only an example and we can tailor-make an Oman self-drive trip for you in most parts of the country. Below are examples of itineraries which are good for self-drive.
