Due to the nature of the terrain or conditions you may encounter on a walking or trekking holiday, you should at least make some basic preparations to ensure your trip is a memorable one for the right reasons.

Hints & tips

  • Walking safari in the Chyulu HillsFor trekking you should have a reasonable to good level of fitness.
  • Take plenty of water and drink little and often.
  • Ensure that you have a comfortable pair of walking boots. If new, ensure you have done several long walks in them before departure.
  • Carry several pairs of woollen socks. Some people wear two pairs to prevent blisters.
  • For trekking, walking poles will help you keep your balance and take pressure off your joints.
  • For hotter climes, take a sunhat, apply plenty of sunscreen and wear loose fitting cotton layers.
  • For colder climes, take several warm base layers, a fleece and a waterproof top.
  • Get into the habit of stretching your hamstring muscles for 10-15 minutes at the start and the end of each day.
