The Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa, and exploring it on foot as part of a walking holiday is a privilege available to guests of just a handful of camps in the area.
The drier months between June and October are an ideal time of year to set off for several days of total immersion in the bush.
Walking for a few hours each day, this is Africa at its most untamed. Without the insulation or interference of a vehicle, you’ll notice each detail of the bush, from hoof prints in the mud to the call of a fish eagle from the trees.
You’ll never really appreciate the power of a lion until you hear an unexpected leaf rustle nearby, or gauge the size of an elephant till you’re just yards away from a heavy-tusked bull.
At night you’ll sleep with nothing but a gauze net between the bed, the trees and the shooting stars.

A small group trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, accompanied by an expert Tanzanian guide and team of porters.
Lake Natron is also the only known breeding ground for East Africa's millions of lesser flamingos which cover the lake between August and October. The Maasai culture is also a fascinating aspect of the area.
The Mahale Mountains are the best place in Africa to track and observe wild chimpanzees; crouching low, you can watch them grooming, drinking and playing. Visiting Lake Tanganyika is another highlight.
The land of West Kilimanjaro is leased from the local Maasai and is a true wilderness area with open plains, acacia woodland and above all, spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Ruaha National Park has a hot, dry climate and dramatic scenery. Game is prolific with large prides of lion, often twenty or more strong.
North of the Ngorongoro Crater you will find the Maasai’s Mountain of God (Ol Donyo Lengai). It is a wild and fascinating area and we recommend a few nights here to gain an insight into Maasai culture.
