This annual festival is held in the rural town of Taihape, which claims to be the gumboot throwing capital of New Zealand and the world. The first Gumboot Day was in 1865 and the tradition has continued until the present day. Degrees in Gumboot Throwology are awarded and there is an attempt on the Gumboot throwing record. The overall winner of the competition receives a golden gumboot. This lively and enjoyable festival lasts for a week and includes firework displays, concerts and competitions, such as the Best Dressed Gumboot, as well as the gumboot throwing competition itself.
