Holiday Ideas in August: The Great Migration crossing the Mara River, Kenya

The open savannahs, rolling grasslands and undulating hills sets the scene for one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles, the annual migration of over two million wildebeest from the plains of the Serengeti to the grasslands of the Masai Mara. One of the most iconic scenes is played out on the Mara River.

The Great Migration crossing the Mara River, Kenya

The wildebeest migration known as The Great Migration is one of the natural wildlife wonders of the world. Approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, numerous zebra and gazelle migrate over 1,800 miles from the Kenyan Masai Mara to the Serengeti, drawn by the promise of fertile plains. A safari to view the migration is an amazing experience of the natural world at its best.

By August, the front runners are preparing to cross the Mara River. First one animal and then another will take the plunge and soon thousands-upon-thousands will swim desperately across the river. This is also the time when waiting crocodiles make the most of this opportunity.

By September most animals will have crossed but as the migration is driven by the annual rains these timings can never be guaranteed.
