Holiday Ideas in July: Camel Cup, Alice Springs, Australia

‘The Alice’, as this town is affectionately known is not only a great place from which to explore the Red Centre, it also has some quirky local attractions such as the annual Camel Cup.

Camel Cup, Alice Springs, Australia

The Camel Cup was held on the Todd River bed in 1971 and proved so popular that it has been continued. The races are very amusing, with some camels refusing to race, much to the annoyance of the rider and trainer. Throughout the day, the grounds of the race are filled with colourful stalls, belly dancers and a wide-range of food. One of the most amusing races is the Honeymoon Handicap, in which a grooms race their camels half way around the arena, get their camel to kneel down and then place their bridel on the camel and race to the finishing line.
