Nyepi is an ancient festival marking the Balinese New Year. On Nyepi day Yama, the lord of hell, is believed to let a horde of devils loose upon the island of Bali. A few days before the celebration, the Balinese try to lure the devils from their dens and undertake various processions and rituals to restore the balance of good and evil on the island. On New Year's day itself the island comes to a complete standstill. This is a great time to visit Bali to experience this fascinating tradition.
