Biography
After finishing his studies Tom left home with a backpack and an empty passport in order to quench his thirst for adventure and take time out to decide on a career path. Somewhere between the trans-Siberian railway, the Andaman islands, Everest base camp and the Caspian sea he fell in love with travel.
Multiple trips and worn out pairs of sandals have taken Tom to the beaches and backwaters of southern India, the heart of the Nepali Himalayas, the fortresses of Rajasthan and the tribal states of the north east. With over a year's independent travel experience around the region it remains a destination he is very passionate about.
Tom’s love for chess, yoga and photography keep him very busy during the week, and at weekends he can often be found exploring London. He hopes to move to a house with more wall space to accommodate his growing collection of maps.
My Most Memorable Experience
Choosing a most memorable experience is a hard task for any avid traveller, but the Kumbh mela festival in Haridwar was unforgettable. The largest religious gathering on earth brings together over a million pilgrims every four years to worship at the Ganges. People flock from all corners of the country to bathe in the waters, and although not for the faint hearted it is something I remain very glad to have experienced.
My Favourite Destination
Calcutta is a city that is too often overlooked by travellers. Despite being a very busy, with a reputation for poverty and overcrowding, many visitors leave feeling thoroughly charmed by the old capital of the Raj. Its colonial history, proud Bengali citizens and position as an old cultural and educational hub make it a unique city with lots to offer both the curious first time visitor and returning enthusiast.
My Favourite Accommodation
It is hard not to fall in love with the Oberoi Grand in Calcutta. Outstanding service and food in a heritage building, with a host of attractions an easy walk from the front gates make it the perfect choice for travellers wishing to treat themselves.
