After graduating from university with a degree in Molecular Biology & Genetics, it was time for a change, and Ben headed to a small rice-farming village in rural southern Japan to teach English. In the following 4 years, he travelled extensively around Asia before returning to the UK to work & continue his love of both travel and Asia. After two years working in the travel industry Ben joined Audley as a specialist allowing him to remain involved in this most diverse of continents full time and to return regularly to the areas he loves. Ben now covers Central Asia, China and Japan for Audley, and indulges his passion for travel photography whenever he can.

Favourite Destination - China

"Of all the areas of Japan, China and Central Asia that I look after here at Audley, none really compares to China for sheer diversity of scenery, history and culture.

From the sub-tropical southern provinces to the rugged mountains of the Karakoram Highway in the west China never fails to fascinate. Every trip to China is a journey of discovery which when coupled with delicious home-cooked Sichuan food, makes China my favourite country to explore. "

Favourite Accommodation - Minzifa

"Located in the old town of Bukhara, the Minzifa Guesthouse is one of only a few small boutique accommodation options in Uzbekistan and one of the best.

Following the traditional townhouse style, the guesthouse is set around a small courtyard, and incorporates part of a disused madrassa.

The guesthouse is within easy walking distance of the main highlights of Bukhara and a great place to stay whilst exploring this fascinating city."

Most Memorable Experience

"At the end of a long and dusty day spent at Kashgar's world-famous livestock market, the final deals of the afternoon were being argued over and completed with firm handshakes abound.

I was watching engrossed as two men haggled over one rather bemused looking calf. The sum was eventually settled at the equivalent of around £70, where upon the seller turned to me, and asked me to count the cash to confirm the transaction.

As I thumbed through the wad of notes, I realised that I had suddenly gone from observer to observed and that all eyes in the crowd had now turned to me. A brief but exhilarating moment at the end of a great day at Kashgar's market!"
