The beaches in Rio are east facing so the sun will set behind the tall buildings fairly early; if you’re planning on spending some time at the beach make sure you go in the morning. Quote end

I love to walk along Havana’s Malecón at sunset. Cubans of all ages come to sit and relax on the sea wall and the views of the city in the fading light are spectacular.  Quote end

Biography

Anna at Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

Having studied Spanish at school, Anna spent 6 months travelling in South America prior to university. She was astonished by the amazing cultural diversity, stunning wildlife and the wonderful people that she met along the way.

From then on she was hooked. She went on to study Spanish and Portuguese at university, incorporating periods of study abroad in Brazil and Cuba. After graduating Anna revisited Latin America numerous times before joining Audley.

Since joining Audley Anna has been lucky enough to revisit Brazil, Costa Rica and most recently Cuba. Highlights including waterfall rappelling deep in the Costa Rican rainforest, attempting to surf on a remote Brazilian beach and salsa dancing in Havana.

My Most Memorable Experience

"I have been fortunate to have many wonderful experiences on my travels, however one that has really stood out was the day I spent exploring the Arenal Volcano region of Costa Rica. I started my day with a leisurely river float tour - drifting quietly downstream I spotted howler monkeys, caiman, sleeping bats and tiger herons.

Next was a hike down to a waterfall with the chance to swim in the plunge pool surrounded by rainforest - a very special experience and worth the 500 steps back up again! I finished my action packed day with an afternoon hike through the forests at the foot of the volcano and finally an evening relaxing in the natural hot springs of this volcanic region.

By the end of the day I was exhausted but completely blown away by the amazing range of activities Costa Rica has to offer."

My Favourite Destination

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

"A cidade maravilhosa, or 'the wonderful city' - the Brazilian's nickname for their city says it all. Stunning beaches, picturesque mountains and Atlantic rainforest, all overlooked by the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer; it's not hard to understand why the locals are so proud of Rio de Janeiro.

I have visited Rio a number of times and it remains my favourite city in the world. Life revolves around the beach - from early in the morning it is busy with people cycling along the beachfront paths, going for an early morning swim or running along the beach. The day goes on and the beach gets busier as locals and tourists alike find their spot in the sun or play volleyball or football on the sand.

But Rio has much more than just beaches, from hiking up the famous Sugarloaf mountain to a trip to Corcovado to get up close to the statue of Christ and take in the stunning views of the city below. Or spend an afternoon in the historic district of Santa Teresa with its quaint cobbled streets and bohemian atmosphere.

Above all the local 'cariocas' make Rio the vibrant, fascinating and joyful city that it is; I'm sure I will continue to be drawn back for many years to come!"

My Favourite Accommodation

Arenal Nayara, Costa Rica

"Located just outside the town of La Fortuna, Arenal Nayara is one of the smaller hotels in the Arenal area and each room has a fantastic view of the volcano. The service is excellent, with every detail catered for and the restaurant has a menu of delicious Costa Rican and international cuisine.

Each room has a beautiful four poster bed and you can relax after a long day exploring the surrounding area in your own private jacuzzi on the balcony or with a treatment at the excellent spa.

I was lucky enough to stay here for a couple of days and I didn't want to leave!"
