Martha's interest in Latin America was sparked initially by her French, German and Spanish degree at Durham University, where she studied some Latin American literature and films. Her keen interest in learning about and experiencing different cultures led her to travel for one month in Mexico and then, some years later, to embark on the trip of a lifetime through Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador. She has since returned to Chile and Argentina with Audley to further her knowledge of these incredible countries with highlights of this trip including flamingo spotting on the salt flats in the Atacama Desert in the north of Chile, walking in the wild and windswept landscapes of Patagonia and the captivating tango performances in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires.
My Most Memorable Experience
Whilst travelling with Audley I was lucky enough to visit the Perito Moreno glacier in the 'Los Glaciares' National Park in Argentine Patagonia. It is named after Francisco Moreno, a famous Argentine explorer, and is one of the 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. It is also one of only three glaciers in Patagonia that is still advancing. I took part in a mini-trekking excursion which saw me don crampons to walk on the glacier itself and then take hundreds of photographs from the viewing platforms and walkways overlooking the glacier. The dazzling ice white/blue colour and the sheer magnitude of this glacier made this experience one I will never forget!
My Favourite Destination
As a big fan of mountain scenery I would have to choose Chilean Patagonia as my favourite destination. The dramatic and jagged skylines in 'Torres del Paine National Park' are strikingly beautiful. There are endless walks to be taken through the stunning landscapes of the whole of Patagonia and, for me, the constantly changing weather offers a greater variety of perspectives of this stunning part of the world. As a keen walker in the UK I am used to dressing with layers and carrying waterproofs! Patagonia is also famous for its lamb, which is my favourite meat!
My Favourite Accommodation
Eolo is the perfect place to relax. This country lodge is a thirty minute drive from El Calafate in Argentina and set in breathtaking scenery, with far-reaching views to Lago Argentino and La Anita Valley. On a clear day you can see as far as the Torres del Paine granite towers in Chile. The service at Eolo is exceptional and from the first moment you are made to feel at home. As the property is set in 3000 hectares of land there are plenty of opportunities to walk or cycle in the surrounding countryside and Eolo will provide knowledgeable private guides to accompany you should you wish.
