If you do a bike tour through the villages of Mai Chao, a thoughtful gesture would be to bring small gifts from home for the kids, such as postcards or maps.  Quote end

If you are travelling to some of the remote hill-tribes, a nice gesture is to offer to pay for medicine which can be bought at a pharmacy with the help of your guide. Quote end

Biography

Jake holding a horseshoe crab in Koh Kong, Cambodia

From an early age Jake has always had a burning passion for languages and travel.

After leaving university with a degree in modern languages, he put a real career on hold to live in Japan and learn Japanese. From here, he had ample opportunity to visit most of Southeast Asia and enjoy experiences such as elephant trekking in Thailand, fish net casting in Vietnam and temple hopping in Cambodia. Finally, much to his mother's delight, Jake came home to embark on his career at Audley where he enjoys sharing with his clients his knowledge, experience and his deep affection for Indochina. Since joining Audley Jake has added Burma to his list of favourite countries.

Along with travel, Jake's other main hobby is photography, having Southeast Asia as his muse although, admittedly, he may not be as good as he thinks he is.

My Most Memorable Experience

Bicycle shorts on and ready to go!

Our full day cycle ride is a fantastic way to stretch those legs and take in the rural scenery surrounding Siem Reap. Along the way you will see the quiet Roluos temple complex before heading out to the floating village of Kampong Phluk.

This really is a great chance to see these stilted skyscrapers for houses - you really wonder how they stay upright! It's also a good opportunity to meet the locals, enjoy a Khmer lunch and put your feet up for a well-earned rest.

My Favourite Destination

Siem Reap, Cambodia

It's hard not to feel relaxed in Siem Reap as this little town keeps its homely charm despite the number of visitors to its biggest pull: the temples of Angkor Wat. Given its size, it's surprising how many good calibre hotels are based here, most taking up space on either side of the river.

If eating and shopping are your thing, there is a dizzying array of restaurants to choose from and a decent night market to stock up on Khmer trinkets.

My Favourite Accommodation

Veranda Natural Resort, Cambodia

La Veranda in Kep is an excellent place to stay for couples and families alike. Situated up on a hill overlooking the crab market, La Veranda boasts fantastic sunset views from the large open restaurant.

I particularly like the recently opened pool  which is very inviting on a hot day and the small bakery which makes tasty cakes and croissants for breakfast is definitely worth trying.
