Biography

James first got the taste for travel whilst studying Physics at Sheffield when he spent two months in Thailand before returning to complete his studies. After years of customer service experience in the hospitality industry between travels, James changed tracks to live and work in Canada for six months before exploring Mexico and the US. After returning to the UK James had to decide on a suitable career path. His passion for travel was soon rewarded with a career at Audley, where he has since travelled extensively through Thailand, Malaysia and Borneo. James is a keen sportsman, representing Audley in many disciplines as activities in the local community increase. Other major passions include food and a recent introduction to scuba diving, both making regular travel to Southeast Asia especially appealing!

Favourite Destination - Kuching

"The waterfront capital of Sarawak is an intriguing mix of colonial influences fused with Malay culture. I recommend staying in the Hilton for river views and a central location.

By day, the busy markets, museums and temples offer something for everyone and as the sun goes down Kuching's quirky bars and restaurants come alive. I recommend Top Spot Food Court to sample an array of fresh seafood whilst mingling with the locals before a stroll down by the river.

A few days in Kuching stands alone as being well worthwhile but it is also the gateway to all that Sarawak has to offer including nearby Bako National Park and Semengkok Orang-utan Sanctuary. Highlights inland include Batang Ai and Mulu National Park."

Favourite Accommodation - Borneo Rainforest Lodge

"This is the most spectacular location that I have been lucky enough to wake up in, set in a meander of the river in the Danum Valley. This area is home to over 200 species of tree per hectare and these house an incredible array of wildlife; including orang-utans, gibbons, flying squirrels, hornbills and the Sumatran rhino.

The sounds of the rainforest have to be heard to be believed and the views are breath taking. If you are looking to be immersed in the jungle then this is the place to be. The simple stilted cabins blend sympathetically in to their surroundings whilst providing space and comfort and the upgrade to a river view room is well worthwhile.

Exploring on foot with the excellent guides takes in canopy walkways, crashing waterfalls and natural pools."

Most Memorable Experience

"A longtail boat ride in complete darkness on a motionless river with the sounds of a sleepless rainforest is an eerie experience and one I will never forget. After a few unnerving seconds I found it totally relaxing.

The highlight was seeing the fantastically bold colouring of kingfishers who sit completely still just inches away as you float slowly past."
