Biography

Joanne at an elephant conservation centre, Thailand

Jo has wanted to explore the world since studying International Relations and Asian Studies at Sydney University and embarked upon her first backpacking trip around Southeast Asia shortly afterwards.

Her interest in the region grew while she spent the next few years pursuing a career in the Australian travel industry and making numerous trips back to Thailand, including a year working with a refugee agency on the Burma border. Since then, she has travelled extensively throughout Africa, Europe and the South Pacific and became passionate about responsible travel and giving back to developing communities.

Jo has now given up her Aussie roots for a dream career with Audley and an Oxford country lifestyle. In her spare time, she does her best to live sustainably while frequenting farmers markets, cooking and eating good food made from local produce.

My Most Memorable Experience

The rural hills of the north are my favourite part of Thailand.

After a strenuous day of trekking, enjoy a home cooked meal and a glass of rice wine with the villagers before falling asleep to the sounds of the countryside.

I have visited this area many times and the resilience of the hill tribe people to overcome their hardships always leaves me inspired.

My Favourite Destination

Danum Valley, Borneo

The Danum Valley is a breathtaking place.

Attempt the best trekking routes in Borneo through virgin rainforest, learn of the ancient traditions of the original inhabitants along the coffin trail track and stand on one of the canopy walkways overlooking the treetops in awe.

Our eco-conscious accommodation, lovely food and excellent guides topped off a wonderful experience, not at all spoiled by the odd leech or two!

My Favourite Accommodation

Sarojin, Thailand

Set on an 11km white sand beach, The Sarojin Khao Lak is not unique for its beautiful surroundings but for its ability to make every guest's stay perfect.

The Sarojin's philosophy is all about choice and the staff go above and beyond to personalise your visit. How about an elephant ride through the jungle to your private dining area, a tailor made menu and your own chef all set next to a magnificent waterfall?

After my many trips to Thailand I can honestly say my stay here was an unforgettable experience and I reluctantly checked out feeling totally relaxed and extra special.
