While staying in Bagan make sure you include a dawn hot air balloon trip over the temples of old Bagan. The views in the early morning light are fantastic. Quote end

Some of the best food in Thailand is available at small, family run restaurants rather than the large hotels. Look for places busy with local people. Quote end

Biography

Stewart on an elephant in Thailand

Stewart's love of travel and Southeast Asia in particular, sprang from a round the world trip undertaken after obtaining a history degree from the University of Sheffield. Thailand was the first stop on his travels and what was meant to be a month long stay in the region turned into four months such was his love for beaches, adventure and the wide range of fabulous cuisine on offer. Since then he has returned to Southeast Asia on five occasions, most recently to Thailand and Burma on an inspection trip with Audley, which reinforced his love for the region. Whether trekking up volcanoes in Indonesia or sea kayaking across Phang-Nga Bay in Thailand, Stewart's sense of adventure and love of the outdoors has lead him to experience some of the most varied and challenging activities in Asia. In his spare time Stewart enjoys a wide range of sporting activities, with squash and football topping the list.

My Most Memorable Experience

"My most memorable travel experience has to be my recent dawn, hot air balloon flight over the temples of Bagan in Burma. The balloon took off just as the sun was rising in the cool pre-dawn air. As we rose further the view over the three thousand plus temples was absolutely breathtaking. The feeling of peacefully floating along as the temples gently drifted past below was amazing, unlike anything I have experience before. The early morning light meant I was able to get some fantastic photos of the sun glinting off the temples, perhaps the best shots I have ever taken. The balloon flight is a must for any visit to Bagan."

My Favourite Destination

Ngapali Beach, Burma

"As an unashamed beach lover, Thailand is an absolute paradise for me but for something totally untouched and undiscovered Ngapali beach in south-western Burma, is hard to beat. Picture a perfect, palm fringe beach with beautiful turquoise water and you are part way there. The charm of Ngapali is not just the beach but the relaxed and laid back atmosphere. There are very few vendors selling things on the beach and the only real noise comes from the waves lapping on the sand. The evenings are spent enjoying a fresh seafood dinner with a lazy drink in hand. Very relaxed and for me the perfect beach spot."

My Favourite Accommodation

Sarojin, Thailand

"My favourite hotel in Southeast Asia is the charming Sarojin Hotel on Khao Lak. The Sarojin oozes elegance and style with a focus on personal service. The extra touches like champagne at breakfast (I was won over immediately!) and extensive private dining options with one of the forty in house chefs cooking just for you, mark the Sarojin out as being a bit special. The extensive gardens are centred around a beautiful lotus pond and large infinity pool. Mini pavilions next to the pool are the perfect place to lounge with a book as time gently drifts past. The beautiful white sand beach is the best in Khao Lak. A fantastic hotel in a stunning location."
