Oxford Bridge of Sighs

If you are planning to visit us from farther afield, you may wish to consider staying overnight or for the weekend and enjoying some of the attractions in the area. Here are some of our recommendations and some accommodation suggestions.

Oxford, the City of Spires

The AshmoleanAs well as its historic colleges, Oxford has some excellent museums offering free entry. The Ashmolean has world class art and archaeological collections, while the Natural History Museum is well worth a visit, but perhaps of most interest to travellers is the Pitt Rivers Museum. This fascinating anthropological collection contains cases and displays of everything from shrunken heads to a dhow, as well as Wilfred Thesiger’s collection of over 40,000 photographs, some of which are on permanent display.

Visit Oxford is the official website for visitor information on Oxford and the surrounding area.

Take a private tour of Oxford

We would highly recommend taking a private walking tour of Oxford and no-one comes more highly recommended than local guide, Jane Curran.

Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Jane Curran moved to Oxford as an infant and has lived and studied there ever since. Her roots lie in languages (French and German) but her passion for guiding began 12 years ago. She has since qualified as a Blue Badge Guide and is a revered member of the Oxford Guild of Guides and Institute of Tourist Guiding. With advance notice Jane’s tours can be designed to suit your interests and most tours will include a visit to at least one college (subject to opening times).

To book your tour please call Jane directly on 01865 515 129 and quote ‘Audley Travel’ (we would recommend advance booking). Prices are from £75 whether you are a couple, a family or a group of friends.

Officially the country's largest area of 'Outstanding Natural Beauty', this picturesque pocket of England area is well known for gentle hillsides or ‘wolds’, outstanding countryside with river valleys, water meadows and beech woods, sleepy ancient limestone villages, historic market towns and for being quintessentially English where time has stood still for over 300 years.
