Amakhala is a collection of four game lodges still owned by the same families of English settlers who arrived in this part of the world over 150 years ago. The 18,000 ha reserve encompasses spectacular scenery around the meandering Bushman's River, with its surrounding cliffs and rolling plains.
The reserve provides superb game viewing with all of the 'Big Five' present. Cheetah and elephant sightings can be especially memorable here. In addition, there are vast herds of antelope, wildebeest and giraffe and the birdlife is prolific. An added bonus is that the Eastern Cape is malaria-free.
Safari Lodge has just 11 rooms, each a luxury thatched hut with en suite bathroom, with bath and outdoor shower, air-conditioning and private patio area. The décor has strong African touches, lending the lodge an authentic safari ambience. The main lodge has a lovely boma area where guests can relax next to the fire after their evening meal and exchange safari stories, and there is also a telescope set up in a mini-observatory for those interested in stargazing.
