Visit Shiwa Ngandu, Zambia

In the heart of northern Zambia is Shiwa Ngandu — "Lake of the Royal Crocodiles" that was made famous by Stewart Gore-Browne, an English gentleman.

He arrived at Shiwa Ngandu in 1911 when surveying the surrounding area for the military and consequently he decided to build his graceful English stately home there in 1928, far from any major habitation overlooking the vast lake, set in a 10,000 hectare estate.

Kapishya Hot Springs

A few miles away from Shiwa Ngandu are the crystal clear waters of the Kapishya Hot Springs. Hot bubbling water gushes out of the beautiful white sand surrounding the pool and mixes with the cooler water from a local river creating a gorgeous place to bathe. This is an unforgettable location for relaxing in the warm water, shaded by lush tropical vegetation and raffia palms.

Activities in and around Shiwa Ngandu

There are numerous activities to enjoy from Shiwa. You can explore the grounds and estate, enjoying walks or horse riding down to the lake, through forests, up Nachipala Hill and along the Katete River. You can also explore the house with all its ornaments, trophies and photographs as well as be privileged to have access to the archived material that Stewart Gore-Browne kept in his old study.

It is also possible to enjoy game drives in open 4x4s, or take boat trips on the lake and through the papyrus swamps along the Mansha River.
