Wickaninnish Inn

Wickaninnish Inn

Tofino, Canada

Having long-established a reputation for excellence, the 'Wick' continues to strive for perfection, and its efforts have been recognised with numerous awards over the years. Located within the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, the inn sits on a small rocky headland looking out to the ocean and backed by pine forest, offering a truly wild setting.

The property is spread over two buildings, both of which have been built from local wood and stone, with huge glass windows allowing for lots of natural light. The interior décor is stylish and sumptuous, reflecting the colours of the landscape with muted neutral tones without detracting from the real highlight — the wonderful views.

OUR OPINION:

The Wickaninnish Inn is one of Canada's legendary hotels, and its reputation for excellent service and spectacular views is well deserved.

Rooms

The charming rooms and suites are spacious and have waterfront views; although views from the beach and first-floor rooms are partially obstructed by trees, so rooms on the second and third floors are recommended. All the rooms in the 'On-the-Beach' building have large picture windows overlooking the ocean. They each have a balcony with Nordic chairs where you can take in the salty sea air, and the en suite bathrooms have underfloor heating. The combination of fir wood and slate creates a quality contemporary feel.

Most rooms in the 'At-the-Pointe' building have small balconies, and all have a gas fireplace, a selection of local books, binoculars, DVD and CD players and complimentary internet access.

Location

On the west coast of Vancouver Island, the Wickaninnish Inn stands on the rugged but picturesque coastline, close to the town of Tofino.

Food and drink

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Pointe Restaurant is the only four diamond restaurant north of Victoria and is renowned for its delicious cuisine, therefore advance reservations are required. Adjacent to the restaurant is the On the Rocks lounge, which has stunning ocean views and is the place to go for a pre- or post-dinner drink. The Driftwood Cafe is a more relaxed environment for coffee or light lunch, perfect for a warming drink after a blustery walk on the beach.

Families

As a family friendly hotel, the Wickaninnish offers babysitting services, a basket of treats for kids on arrival, a kids' in-room movie night set up, children’s bicycles for use during your stay, beach toys, board games, books and puzzles, as well as child-sized bathrobes on request. Hotel staff can also take children and an accompanying adult on a local scavenger hunt through the surrounding forest and along the beach.

Facilities and activities

Guests can unwind in the cosy Look-Out Library, which looks out toward the beach and provides books, DVDs and binoculars should you wish to watch surfers taking on the waves. There's also the Ancient Cedars Spa at the Pointe, which features an extensive treatment menu for a little holiday pampering as well as daily yoga sessions, while the fitness centre allows you keep active even when back at the inn.

Environmental and social responsibility

The Wickaninnish has attained the coveted Five Green Keys in the Green Key certification scheme, which awards accommodation facilities for exemplary environmental stewardship. Only 50 hotels in the world have achieved this, so it's a great reflection of the hotel's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
