Whitehorse is named after the rapids on the Yukon River that reminded gold prospectors of the 'flowing manes of albino Appaloosas'. Every springtime the people of the town gather for the Celebration of Swans, the largest birding event in the Yukon.
The annual Celebration of Swans, brings residents and visitors alike out to various designated swan viewing areas to welcome not only these impressive birds but also the arrival of spring to the north. Each springtime, trumpeter and tundra swans, as well as other waterfowl, head to their nesting grounds in the north and it's this event which in turn sees many of the residents and visitors alike flock to open water to view this impressive spectacle.
