A two-hour drive northeast of the Khao Yai National Park, and deeper into Isaan's many provinces, you find Prasat Phimai.

Hindu-Buddhist shrine

One of the oldest surviving Khmer temple sites in the area it was originally constructed of red sandstone in the 10th and 11th centuries. This Hindu-Buddhist shrine pre-dates Angkor Wat, yet shares a number of stylistic attributes.

Sandstone craftmanship from the 11th century can be found at PhimaiDue in part to a sensitive restoration project by the Fine Arts Department, Prasat Phimai has a unique quality with some of the most detailed Khmer lintel work still visible after a thousand years of weather, war and occupation.
