The picturesque city of Albany on Western Australia's beautiful south coast is the site of Western Australia's first European settlement and is blessed with stunning coastal views.

Emu Point, AlbanyEstablished as a military and penal outpost in 1826, Albany is one of the state's oldest towns and consequently has a rich history to explore. From the 1940s the whaling industry defined the town until 1978 when the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company closed.

Nowadays whale watching has replaced this, and because of the protected shelter of the Princess Royal Harbour on the edge of the King George Sound, large numbers of humpback and southern right whales are frequently seen in the calm bay close to shore during May to September.

With its many historic buildings, spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife, Albany has become one of Western Australia's most enchanting destinations.
