This centrally-located hotel has a traditional exterior which is in keeping with the surrounding architecture of medieval half-timbered buildings. Within, however, aBode Canterbury is contemporary in style with sleek, minimalist decor contrasting with original features such as the wooden beamed ceiling in reception.

Just to the right of the entranceway is a lively champagne bar, while the hotel’s main restaurant extends to the back and serves a menu of modern European cuisine along with a good choice of wine. Rooms are spacious and simply styled with tartan bed throws, wooden headboards and modern amenities. Many room categories have aBode’s trademark feature wallpaper of paint pots, bookshelves or postcards.

The hotel is conveniently central and is situated directly opposite the attractive Beaney House of Art & Knowledge, less than five minutes on foot from the cathedral.

OUR OPINION:

The central location cannot be beaten and although we feel service isn’t perfect, the rooms are comfortable and the food is great.

Rooms

Each of the hotel’s 72 rooms is decorated in the typical aBode style which blends elements of the building’s original character with contemporary decor and quite often, a wall of striking feature wallpaper. Rooms are all equipped with modern amenities including air conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. From Enviable rooms upwards you’ll also have a complimentary tuck box of local treats, as well as additional space and seating. Bed sizes differ between rooms, with the higher categories having larger beds. Most Enviable and Fabulous rooms have a separate freestanding, roll-top bath in addition to a wet room shower.

Location

aBode Canterbury is situated on the attractive, pedestrian-only High Street, directly opposite The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge and adjacent to several popular shops and cafés. It is less than a five-minute walk to the cathedral, and even closer to Greyfriars Gardens which sit on the banks of the Great Stour River.

Food and drink

The hotel’s front-facing champagne bar provides an elegant space to sit and people watch, while the separate Old Brewery Tavern on the adjoining street has a convivial atmosphere, with live music and classic pub food. The hotel’s main County Restaurant serves a modern European menu of local fish and meat dishes, all beautifully presented.
