An attractive 19th-century Scots-Baronial building complete with turreted towers and surrounding gardens, Greystones is a deluxe B&B set in an imposing position on the hillside overlooking Oban’s waterfront.
Guests enter through a grand hall with wooden floors and archways, a marble fireplace, and intricate plasterwork on the ceiling. A wide staircase leads up to the five guest rooms which are all spacious, contemporary and elegantly minimalist in style, with white and grey tones predominating. All rooms have multiple windows and high ceilings, while the en suite bathrooms have dark slate floors.
A buffet breakfast is served in the large, turreted breakfast room where the tall bay windows flood the room with light and provide excellent views across the sea. Hot dishes such as kedgeree, a choice of frittatas or scrambled eggs with locally-smoked salmon are also available.
Overall, the guesthouse has a very intimate feel with a calm and relaxed atmosphere that makes it a peaceful and convenient base in the heart of Oban. Please note, however, that there is no elevator.
The property has just five rooms, accessed via a grand, wooden staircase with a stained glass window halfway up. Each room is large and minimalist in style, with clean greys and whites throughout. Three of the rooms face the bay and have fantastic sea views over the Isle of Kerrera. The Sea View Turret Suite has a seating area in the turret, while others have additional seating in the bay window. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, an LCD TV and a DVD player, and the two largest rooms have a free-standing bath in addition to a walk-in shower. The smallest room just has a shower, and the two remaining rooms have a shower over a bath.
Greystones is situated in a residential area of Oban on the hill between the waterfront and McCaig’s Tower. It takes about five minutes on foot to reach either location. This hillside vantage point gives excellent views across Oban Bay. The property has a car park, although the road to reach the hotel is quite narrow.
Food and Drink
A buffet breakfast is served in the large, light and airy breakfast room which has views across the water. Options include cereals, muesli, fruit salad and yoghurt, in addition to a cooked-to-order menu featuring eggs, frittatas or kedgeree, as well as tea or coffee and toast. As this is a B&B no other meals are offered, but the owners will happily recommend places for your lunch or evening meal.
The views from Greystones are fantastic, and we love the spacious, minimalist rooms here.
