The striking-looking Methven Castle, situated just under half an hour west of Perth, was the home of Margaret Tudor (the sister of Henry VIII and queen of James IV before he died), and was where she died in 1541. Today it's owned by the Murdoch family, who have lovingly restored the building to its former glory. David and his wife Alex live here still and open up their home as a unique castle homestay. There are just two guest bedrooms here, both en suite, but even if just one room is in use there'll be no other guests staying. An original stone staircase and exposed stone walls covered by hanging tapestries lead to the bedrooms, both of which are spacious and have a kettle and homemade tablet fudge. One room has a four-poster bed and its compact bathroom is situated in a turret, while the other room is larger and has a mezzanine level with a second bed. Throughout the castle you’ll find antique wooden furniture, wooden floors and beams, and paintings by David’s father. Alex and David also serve a delicious three-course evening meal and can join you for dinner if you wish.

Rooms

There are just two rooms at Methven Castle, which are situated up the winding stone staircase. Due to its age and authenticity, there's no elevator in the castle. Both of the rooms are spacious, with large and comfortable beds and a selection of homemade shortbread and tablet fudge on arrival. The smallest room has a four-poster bed and its private bathroom is located within the small turret. The second room has a mezzanine level which can accommodate an additional bed if needed.

Location

Methven is well positioned for both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, at just over an hour’s drive from each. It's situated around 30 minutes west of the city of Perth, where Scone Palace and the Black Watch Museum are found. Methven itself is a small village with a local shop and pub.

Food and Drink

Breakfast at Methven is a highlight of a stay here. A hot breakfast (chosen the night before) can be prepared, alongside seasonal fruit compote, muesli, granola, porridge, toast and croissants. Alex and David can also cook a delicious three-course dinner if you request in advance, accompanied by homemade bread.

Our opinion

This is one of our most exclusive properties in Scotland. We love the tea and homemade cake that you’re greeted with on arrival, and the whole experience of staying in the castle feels like you've stepped into a fairytale.
