Shangri-La

Toronto, Canada

The Shangri-La is located in a tall tower in an area where the city’s financial, university, and entertainment districts overlap. It offers all the facilities and the class you’d expect of a urban property of this hotel group. Its entrance is a vast arcade of floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light. The lobby is elegant and spacious with many seating areas and artistic, Asian-inspired touches everywhere, such as calligraphy-style art, screens and potted orchids. The pool complex and gym area is also light-filled and airy, and service - whether in the lobby bar or the concierge - is discreet and attentive.

Rooms

The hotel offers just over 200 extremely spacious and contemporary guest rooms with marble bathrooms and products by L’Occitane. Room choices include Deluxe (entry level), Executive and Premier rooms and a range of suites. Like the lobby, they’re furnished in rich, neutral tones such as caramel and maroon, and are decorated with Asian-inspired artwork. With floor-to-ceiling windows, rooms tend to feel even more spacious. Several mod-cons come as standard, including an iPod docking station, the use of an iPad, and a flatscreen TV. Bathtubs are luxuriantly deep and there’s a separate shower, as well as a mini-bar and Nespresso coffee machine.

Location

The hotel sits on University Avenue, a short walk from shops and restaurants and the CN Tower is around a 15 to 20 minute walk away. It’s also a ten minute walk to the performance venues of the entertainment district.

Food and Drink

Wine and light refreshments are served in the Lobby Lounge (sometimes to a soundtrack of a tinkling piano). High tea is also served daily. Bosk, the hotel’s signature dining room, offers fine dining: expect Asian dishes given a Canadian twist. It also has a pleasant outdoor terrace for al fresco warm-weather dining.

Families

Children’s meal plans are available at the hotel and babysitting services are available at an additional cost. The hotel doesn’t offer cribs or extra beds for children. Connecting rooms are also available for families.

Facilities and Activities

Facilities include a restaurant, lobby lounge and bar, a 24-hour gym with yoga studio, a large indoor swimming pool, sauna and whirlpool, spa, hair/beauty salon, parking (payable locally), laundry and valet service, 24-hour room service, babysitting/child care, a business centre, and concierge service. Its spa, Miraj Hammam Spa, has a Middle-Eastern flair and a full treatment menu. Wi-Fi is complimentary.

Accessibility

The hotel has an accessible street-level entrance. Rooms and bathrooms are accessible and feature roll-in showers.

Our opinion

A classic, upmarket option which maintains a graceful, relaxed ambiance. Go there to escape the city’s busyness, but you can also make the most of its convenient location in central Toronto, within walking distance of many key museums, entertainment venues, and other attractions.
